Oracle Strengthens Interoperability and User Experience with General Availability of FIDO2 WebAuthn Support for Cloud Identity

"Given the distributed nature of today’s technology environment, zero trust has become the standard for security. Every interaction must be authenticated and validated for every user accessing every system or application every time. To that end, interoperability is more important than ever.To that end, interoperability is more important than ever. FIDO2 Web Authentication (WebAuthn) is quickly emerging as an important interoperability standard that enables users to select and manage an authenticator of their own (security keys, or built-in platform authenticators, such as a mobile device) that works with their web browser of choice (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Apple Safari, etc.) for secure access to any websites or applications that support the WebAuthn standard."

Modernization of Identity and Access Management

Next Generation IDaaS: Moving From Tactical to Strategic

Today, I posted a blog entry to the Oracle Identity Management blog titled Next Generation IDaaS: Moving From Tactical to Strategic. In the post, I examine the evolution of IDaaS and look toward the next generation of Enterprise Identity and Access Management. I believe that the adoption of IDaaS by enterprises has typically been a reactive, tactical response to the quick emergence of SaaS (and the associated loss of control). The next generation of IDaaS will be more strategic and carefully planned to better meet evolving enterprise requirements.

Note that I'm not talking about the technology. Nor am I talking about consumer use-cases or developer adoption of outsourced authentication. In this post, I'm looking at IDaaS from the perspective of enterprise IAM and the on-going Digital Transformation.

Here's a few quotes that capture the essence:
First generation Identity as a Service (IDaaS) was a fashion statement that’s on its way out. It was cool while it lasted. And it capitalized on some really important business needs. But it attempted to apply a tactical fix to a strategic problem.

Security functions are coalescing into fewer solutions that cover more ground with less management overhead. Digital Enterprises want more functionality from fewer solutions.

The next generation of IAM is engineered specifically for Digital Business providing a holistic approach that operates in multiple modes. BMWs and Bicycles: The Value of Complexity

If your ideas about Oracle Identity & Access solutions start and end with the word complexity, you're missing the big picture. Contrary to what competitors might be telling you, Oracle's current IAM solution looks nothing like a conglomeration of distinct, aging products. If you want to know about today's Oracle IAM solutions, consider concepts like: common data model, consolidated feature set, shared services, unified admin and operational consoles, and a lower TCO than managing multiple point solutions.

It didn't happen by accident. Oracle has a large, diverse, and talented team of engineers and developers. I'm consistently impressed by the level of talent roaming the halls at Oracle. And the team knew years ago that continued innovation was important. They intentionally expended significant effort to rationalize the product backend so that it's not simply multiple integrated products. Did you know that Oracle uses a single connector for user provisioning, access governance, and privileged account management? Did you know that Oracle's provisioning product also provides access requests, risk scoring, and entitlement reviews in a single product? (not a license bundle - a single installed product)

Can the entire solution be downloaded onto a smartphone and installed in 3-5 minutes? No. But, the solution can meet any current or future Identity & Access requirement with a modular, unified approach to Identity & Access for legacy, enterprise, cloud, mobile, and social use-cases. And there are numerous customer case studies that demonstrate Oracle's IAM technology has already been implemented in mobile, consumer, and IoT scenarios with extreme scale. Claiming that Oracle can't handle third platform use-cases is either ignorant or deceitful. Which it is depends on who you're talking to.

That's not to say that there aren't IAM solutions on the market that offer less complexity. But let's investigate complexity for a moment.

Is complexity good or bad?

If you already answered, you're missing the point. The reality is that complexity should be commensurate with your needs and the optimal amount of complexity will depend on the context.

A BMW is more complex than a bicycle. If your goal is take a leisurely ride through a park to enjoy the weather while getting some exercise, then a bicycle may be a great fit. And a BMW will miss the mark entirely. If the goal is to find a vehicle for your daily commute to work, you might still opt for a bicycle but you'll be balancing the desire for less complexity with the BMW's feature advantages of getting you there quicker, shielding you from the weather, and requiring less effort. If your intended use-cases involve cross-country trips or travel in severe weather, the complexity of BMW engineering becomes a thing of desire. And if you fall in love with the way a BMW handles corners at speed, well... let's just say you may stop thinking about complexity altogether.

Getting back to IAM, here are some IAM features to consider:

  • Mobile Security - True SSO to backend applications from the mobile device
  • Mobile Security - Apps integrated with Enterprise Access Mgt
  • Identity Governance - Integrated Access Requests and Provisioning
  • Identity Governance - Entitlement Certifications
  • Identity Governance - Single point of audit across cloud, mobile, and enterprise
  • Privileged Account Management - Proxied Access, Session Management
  • Privileged Account Management - Session Recording
  • Privileged Account Management - Emergency Access
When you begin to think about how these capabilities can be used to enable new business opportunities, it starts to feel like a BMW approaching a corner. And you'll be glad you're not on a bicycle.

IAM for the Third Platform

As more people are using the phrase "third platform", I'll assume it needs no introduction or explanation. The mobile workforce has been mobile for a few years now. And most organizations have moved critical services to cloud-based offerings. It's not a prediction, it's here.

The two big components of the third platform are mobile and cloud. I'll talk about both.

Mobile

A few months back, I posed the question "Is MAM Identity and Access Management's next big thing?" and since I did, it's become clear to me that the answer is a resounding YES!

Today, I came across a blog entry explaining why Android devices are a security nightmare for companies. The pain is easy to see. OS Updates and Security Patches are slow to arrive and user behavior is, well... questionable. So organizations should be concerned about how their data and applications are being accessed across this sea of devices and applications. As we know, locking down the data is not an option. In the extended enterprise, people need access to data from wherever they are on whatever device they're using. So, the challenge is to control the flow of information and restrict it to proper use.

So, here's a question: is MDM the right approach to controlling access for mobile users? Do you really want to stand up a new technology silo that manages end-user devices? Is that even practical? I think certain technologies live a short life because they quickly get passed over by something new and better (think electric typewriters). MDM is one of those. Although it's still fairly new and good at what it does, I would make the claim that MDM is antiquated technology. In a BYOD world, people don't want to turn control of their devices over to their employers. The age of enterprises controlling devices went out the window with Blackberry's market share.

Containerization is where it's at. With App Containerization, organizations create a secure virtual workspace on mobile devices that enables corporate-approved apps to access, use, edit, and share corporate data while protecting that data from escape to unapproved apps, personal email, OS malware, and other on-device leakage points. For enterprise use-case scenarios, this just makes more sense than MDM. And many of the top MDM vendors have validated the approach by announcing MAM offerings. Still, these solutions maintain a technology silo specific to remote access which doesn't make much sense to me.

As an alternate approach, let's build MAM capabilities directly into the existing Access Management platform. Access Management for the third platform must accommodate for mobile device use-cases. There's no reason to have to manage mobile device access differently than desktop access. It's the same applications, the same data, and the same business policies. User provisioning workflows should accommodate for provisioning mobile apps and data rights just like they've been extended to provision Privileged Account rights. You don't want or need separate silos.

Cloud

The same can be said, for cloud-hosted apps. Cloud apps are simply part of the extended enterprise and should also be managed via the enterprise Access Management platform.

There's been a lot of buzz in the IAM industry about managing access (and providing SSO) to cloud services. There have even been a number of niche vendors pop-up that provide that as their primary value proposition. But, the core technologies for these stand-alone solutions is nothing new. In most cases, it's basic federation. In some cases, it's ESSO-style form-fill. But there's no magic to delivering SSO to SaaS apps. In fact, it's typically easier than SSO to enterprise apps because SaaS infrastructures are newer and support newer standards and protocols (SAML, REST, etc.)

My Point

I guess if I had to boil this down, I'm really just trying to dispel the myths about mobile and cloud solutions. When you get past the marketing jargon, we're still talking about Access Management and Identity Governance. Some of the new technologies are pretty cool (containerization solves some interesting, complex problems related to BYOD). But in the end, I'd want to manage enterprise access in one place with one platform. One Identity, One Platform. I wouldn't stand up a IDaaS solution just to have SSO to cloud apps. And I wouldn't want to introduce an MDM vendor to control access from mobile devices.

The third platform simply extends the enterprise beyond the firewall. The concept isn't new and the technologies are mostly the same. As more and newer services adopt common protocols, it gets even easier to support increasingly complex use-cases. An API Gateway, for example, allows a mobile app to access legacy mainframe data over REST protocols. And modern Web Access Management (WAM) solutions perform device fingerprinting to increase assurance and reduce risk while delivering an SSO experience. Mobile Security SDKs enable organizations to build their own apps with native security that's integrated with the enterprise WAM solution (this is especially valuable for consumer-facing apps).

And all of this should be delivered on a single platform for Enterprise Access Management. That's third-platform IAM.

Identity Officer

This morning, Dave Kearns of KuppingerCole revived an old conversation started by my friend Matt Pollicove of CTI back in 2006 about the potential need for an Identity Officer. I had some comments then, but I wanted to add another thought now that I'm older and a little wiser.

One of the things I've noticed over recent years is that big, brand name companies who are well-respected for their primary business and their ability to execute on internal IT projects have many little "messes" related to technology that nobody talks about. A mess could be a mistake (bad purchase, wrong implementer) or it could be something that started out OK and grew into a mess over time. One of the common messes out there is related to interconnectivity of various IAM solutions.

It looks like this: One group within the company bought Oracle or IBM for user account management and built a complex infrastructure around it that they're afraid to touch. Another bought SailPoint or Aveksa - maybe both - and incorporated 40% of the intended applications then the project stalled out. A third group is using Ping for Federation with partners while a fourth runs Microsoft FIM and ADFS to support other partners.

I recently spoke to the "Lead Architect for IAM" at one of the world's top banks. With a title like that, I figured he'd be in the middle of orchestrating the various interdependencies between IAM systems. When I mentioned an IAM brand name that I knew they had deployed, he said something like, "oh no, that's a different group". He knew it existed but didn't know much more about it.

In the above scenario, one obvious consideration is that there's time and money spent purchasing and implementing these technologies which have overlapping functionality. It's wasteful and inefficient. But there's a bigger problem with that scenario than cost and maintenance.

When the business wants to enable some new venture (new partnership, new regulation, M&A, etc.) it's extremely difficult to adapt to new requirements because of all the little messes that would need to be cleaned up. And which group should lead the effort? The access certification system is the newest and its owners have some political pull. But the provisioning system is larger, more established, and now supports the desired certification scenarios. Each of the four or five IAM systems has valuable data. How do you bring it all together to meet the immediate need?

I probably don't need to spell out where an Identity Officer could have made a positive impact in the above scenario. Reduced cost, reduced overhead, greater flexibility, speed to implement. I think Dave is on to something by reviving this topic. As a doctor of IAM, he's taking a holistic look at the identity needs of organizations. It's not just about technology or workflows. It's also about understanding executive ownership and aligning IAM with business needs. Organizational structure is a big part of that conversation.

Virtual Directory as Database Security

I've written plenty of posts about the various use-cases for virtual directory technology over the years. But, I came across another today that I thought was pretty interesting.

Think about enterprise security from the viewpoint of the CISO. There are numerous layers of overlapping security technologies that work together to reduce risk to a point that's comfortable. Network security, endpoint security, identity management, encryption, DLP, SIEM, etc. But even when these solutions are implemented according to plan, I still see two common gaps that need to be taken more seriously.

One is control over unstructured data (file systems, SharePoint, etc.). The other is back door access to application databases. There is a ton of sensitive information exposed through those two avenues that aren't protected by the likes of SIEM solutions or IAM suites. Even DLP solutions tend to focus on perimeter defense rather than who has access. STEALTHbits has solutions to fill the gaps for unstructured data and for Microsoft SQL Server so I spend a fair amount of time talking to CISOs and their teams about these issues.

While reading through some IAM industry materials today, I found an interesting write-up on how Oracle is using its virtual directory technology to solve the problem for Oracle database customers. Oracle's IAM suite leverages Oracle Virtual Directory (OVD) as an integration point with an Oracle database feature called Enterprise User Security (EUS). EUS enables database access management through an enterprise LDAP directory (as opposed to managing a spaghetti mapping of users to database accounts and the associated permissions.)

By placing OVD in front of EUS, you get instant LDAP-style management (and IAM integration) without a long, complicated migration process. Pretty compelling use-case. If you can't control direct database permissions, your application-side access controls seem less important. Essentially, you've locked the front door but left the back window wide open. Something to think about.

Gartner IAM Notes

In case you missed all the live tweeting by me and others, here are some notes from this week's Gartner IAM Summit:
  • There seemed to be a common theme that the primary driver for IAM projects has shifted from operational (early) to compliance (recent) to business enablement (now).
  • Communication to the business stakeholders is key. (not new, but as important as ever)
  • IAM and IAG seem to be converging.

  • The CIO’s business goals are to increase business growth, attract new customers, and reduce cost.
  • The CIO’s IT goals are to deliver solutions, manage infrastructure, reduce cost of IT, and expand analytics.


(from Jeff Wheatman’s session on DG)

  • Despite increasing requirements, less than 10% of orgs will get above maturity level 1 by 2015.
  • Solutions that help identify ownership and accountability are very immature.

Customers will look at solutions that can:

  • 3. Prevent situations (most difficult & expensive)
  • 2. Alert & Notify upon high-risk situation
  • 1. Document & Accept risk (which is OK for many – least costly)

Unstructured data remains a very big problem.

ROI is impossible to demonstrate. Business cases are based on:

  • Efficiency: Any perceived time savings
  • Effectiveness: Improved audit, tracking, regulatory
  • Enablement: enhance business opps, reduce friction, integrate networks, etc.

You must continuously show value to the business by communicating success and building credibility with regular, honest feedback. You can do this by stating goals clearly up front and tracking toward them. One great example was to send a survey to stakeholders on where their pain lies. Measure their pain (1-10). Track progress on pain level improvements to show progress and success.

Roughly 45% of attendees reported that IAM was sponsored by CIO and 45% by CISO. Two things everyone has in common as drivers: Time & Money.

Unstructured Data into Identity & Access Governance

I've written before about the gap in identity and access management solutions related to unstructured data.

When I define unstructured data to people in the Identity Management space, I think the key distinguishing characteristic is that there is no entitlement store with which an IAM or IAG solution can connect to gather entitlement information. 

On File Systems, for example, the entitlements are distributed across shares & folders, inherited through the file tree structure, applied through group memberships that may be many levels deep, and there's no common security model to make sense of it.

STEALTHbits has the best scanner in the industry (I've seen it go head-to-head in POC's) to gather users, groups, and permissions across unstructured data environments and the most flexible ability to perform analysis that (1) uncovers high-risk conditions (such as open file shares, unused permissions, admin snooping, and more), (2) identifies content owners, and (3) makes it very simple to consume information on entitlements (by user, by group, or by resource).

Traditional identity solutions focus on access to applications, but that misses as much as 80 percent of corporate data.

We’ve entered the age of access governance. Organizations need to know who has access to what data and how they were granted that access. Identity and Access Governance (IAG) solutions address these issues while managing enterprise access. They provide visibility into access, policy and role management, and risk assessment—and they facilitate periodic entitlement reviews of access across numerous systems. Most enterprise IAG solutions are missing a key piece to the puzzle, though: unstructured data.

Aveksa and Radical Changes to Identity Management

I don't generally like to discuss specific vendors - especially if I don't have a strong relationship with them. But I saw a press release last week that was titled Aveksa Radically Changes the Economics of Identity and Access Management. I have to admit that I probably grimaced and thought "radically changes... seriously? Are they kidding?" The release stated that they introduced a new product called Access Fulfillment Express that's going to break "the cycle of heavy investments". I sarcastically thought "Yeah, sure it is."

I know Aveksa to be good within their sweet spot - Access Governance across enterprise applications - but I didn't think of them as an influential player in Identity Management (provisioning) probably because I knew they integrated with most of the major IAM vendors for provisioning tasks. So, I was pretty skeptical that they'd be doing anything that "radically changes the economics" of an IAM project. That was, until today when I had an opportunity to speak with someone from Aveksa.

Consider my tune changed.

One of the most complicated parts of any IAM deployment traditionally has been the development of the connectors. The connectors establish the link to the target systems and define the rules by which data will be managed. There's a lot of work on both the business side and technical side to get the connectors working properly. The connector work often makes or breaks the entire IAM system.

So, what has Aveksa done to the connectors to improve upon them? Essentially, they've dumbed them down. If the connector is JUST a connector and doesn't have all that business logic built in, the process of deploying a connector becomes much easier. They called them Lightweight Adapters. It's analogous to a set of APIs that can carry out whatever commands are sent to them. And the commands, then, and business logic, is managed by the application.

IAM solutions originated as complex systems of connectors that later bolted on a UI to provide workflow. By starting with the UI as the real business value, Aveksa may have stumbled upon (or brilliantly planned?) a way to radically simplify deployment and management of IAM solutions.

NOTE: I haven't vetted Aveksa's approach in any detail. I haven't deployed the solution or even looked at the documentation, but I thought the shift in approach was worthy of discussion.

Introducing FishEye Group

Two weeks ago, I updated and re-announced my Identity Management list and since then I've added a dozen or so more entries. Among the new ones, I had the pleasure to add a newcomer to the Identity Management space. My good friend and long time colleague Kishan Malineni has finally incorporated on his own and will bring his talents to the identity industry as FishEye Group. Full disclosure: He asked if I would assist with business strategy and I accepted an unpaid position on the board. And I'm excited to help.

If you don't know Kishan, it's because he hasn't spent much time blogging, tweeting, or hitting the conference circuit. He has spent 50+ hours a week for the past decade hands-on actually building identity management solutions (and winning the hearts of CIOs and project sponsors). Everybody that has worked with him has positive things to say about his technical skills, integrity, work ethic, and positive attitude. Most recently, he has earned an excellent reputation as one of the industry's leading integrators of Oracle's OIM 11g. In a previous role, he developed the first real-world implementation in the higher education vertical (possibly globally) of Oracle Identity Manager 11g. He also developed the industry's first set of cloud connectors for OIM.

FishEye Group has hit the ground running with it's first project already underway and is in the process of putting partnerships in place and placing a number of additional projects on the calendar.

After a few years of neglect, I finally updated my Identity and Access Management list. I added a few vendors who weren't around 2-3 years ago, removed some who have since disappeared, and moved others under their new parent companies.

A new tool for Identity Management: AD Event Push SDK

I had a brainstorm last night. Most Identity Management systems poll Active Directory to pull changes on a periodic basis. And admittedly, that approach is often sufficient. But, here's an alternative that gets you real-time push updates from AD with the person who made the change (which is often useful for work flow/approval and audit trail purposes):

A small utility service that sits on the DC waiting for changes
Picks up events in real-time
Sends event info to a DLL that you compile

The DLL determines what to do with the info based on:
- Who did it
- What groups the person is a member of
- What happened (add/mod/del)
- Which object or object-type was affected (admin accounts, service accounts, etc)
- Which attributes changed

The programming would be very similar to building an ILM management agent.

I'm wondering if there's some value for you if we strip it down to a single DLL that you would control. Let me know.

Identity as a Platform

I was asked for my thoughts on an article titled Hosters Need to Think about Identity as a Platform Play. When I clicked to read the article, I was happy to see it was written by Novell's Dale Olds who always has interesting and informed things to say.

I agree with Olds' assessment. SaaS platform vendors (hosters) should really get on the ball with offering identity services as part of their hosting packages. They should do similar with data encryption as well (both to the endpoint and in storage). Security is complicated -- extremely important and extremely easy to get wrong. It only takes a small oversight somewhere along the line to break the chain. SaaS application vendors would be wise to leverage proven, trusted solutions for access management rather than trying to create their own.

I think Olds overstated how simple it would be for applications to switch platforms. It seems to me that it's pretty complicated even in the case of moving a simple PHP website to another host. And most SaaS applications will be much more complicated than that. And the other part of that thought was that providing identity services would tie-in the application provider to that platform. I would recommend to hosting providers that they make it easier rather than harder to move. That'll be a key differentiator and ultimately drive more business/revenue to your brand. (I'm not saying that Dale was recommending to purposely make it complicated - it's just how it is.) BUT - there's still a business driver to build identity into the platform. Removing the complexities of security from the application development process could save 30% of time and resources in standing up a new application versus having to build it all from scratch.

And to Steve (from Axciom)'s point (in the comments), yes! Ideally, Platform as a Service vendors will provide more than authentication. Baked in security could incorporate firewalls, authentication, multi-factor authentication (& transaction-based), authorization, encryption (in-motion and at-rest), activity and access audit, SoD monitoring, and more.

We're obviously very early in this whole process. I think we're moving in the right direction, but it'll take time to get it all right.

IAM in the Cloud - from Verizon and Novell

Interesting newcomer to the Identity in the Cloud space. I look forward to seeing a side-by-side comparison of these solutions. Clearly, when organizations are ready to have their identities managed outside of their own walls (even if just external accounts), there will be a number of options available. I see an opportunity for a few good independent consultants to really understand the intricacies of all these options so they can help customers wade through all the terminology and misconceptions. ...because I don't think it'll be easy.

Identity Enablement

I just got out of a session led by The Burton Group's Kevin Kampman who made the point that the Identity Management conversation is changing. It can no longer be about technology. It needs to be about business needs. Don't ask what is the tool? Ask what problem are you trying to solve?

During Q&A, somebody made the point that currently, Identity Management is often mandated by the security team who is implementing it as a way to enforce secure practices and restrict access where appropriate. The business owners may not always have the right to choose where they're comfortable with increased risk and where they're not. Valid point.

I think Kampman's point, though, is that in a larger sense, as the industry moves into the cloud and becomes further distributed, Identity tools will be more about enablement rather than restriction. Identity Enablement tools such as Federation solutions will enable conversations and transactions to take place that haven't been possible in past (and current) models. So, the conversation starts with a business team that is looking to expand its capabilities rather than with a technology team who might be focused on specific tool sets.

To me, it's a whole different mindset than traditional enterprise Identity Management. And therefore, it's an entirely different conversation (not just a re-focusing of the existing conversation.)

It will be an interesting decade for identity.

TEC 2010: Active Directory Family

The day one keynote speech this morning was presented by Microsoft's Conrad Bayer. One of the key take-aways from this morning's keynote for me for a consistent theme throughout the talk that Microsoft's Identity & Access solutions are now all part of the same product group. The Identity & Access group's solutions include Active Directory, ADFS federation, RMS rights management, FIM life cycle identity management, PKI/Certificates, identity synchronization, etc.

Bayer also talked about the future of these solutions and briefly discussed that ADFS could evolve to become an authorization server. Specifically, he talked about attributes and claims being the core components of authorization. The idea would be that ADFS could sit in between local and remote directory environments and provide answers to standards-based requests about claims. Bayer was asked later about the challenges around the idea that, for AD, groups are equivalent to roles, but other systems' roles require more than just group memberships. His answer pointed back to attributes and claims as being the way to meet those business requirements and seemed to say that applications would be where you would manage roles. The application would define and manage roles while leveraging the AD infrastructure to answer access-related questions via claims. He didn't say it (or even suggest it), but I wonder if this is a move toward a completely different paradigm than one based on roles. Perhaps roles will never be the right answer since what we've all seen is that in reality, people don't fit nicely into a pre-defined set of business roles.


Another thing that caught my ear was Bayer's point that Smartcards and Certificates are becoming more important as environments move to distributed and cloud-based solutions. Could it finally be the year of PKI? BTW - I see 'the year of PKI' as a modern-day proverb about something that it perpetually about to happen but never really does. Having said that, I'm a fan of PKI as a technology and can see that his point has some validity. The fact that a particular solution is in the cloud is not necessarily the problem. The bigger problem is that there are a variety of apps moving into the cloud each with different security models and underlying security mechanisms. PKI technology might help us figure out how to provide a manageable solution for that complexity.

At the end of the day, I think Microsoft made the right move by bringing these technologies together, but it sounds like it'll be a while before we see a truly unified, native/out-of-the-box set of identity features such as point and click federation, PKI, or rights management.
